What are expansion joints?

Compensators are applied as a flexible pipe section for compensating movements and vibrations in the pipe. The use of compensators reduces stress in the pipeline and in connected equipment. In case of vibration, the vibration source is isolated, reducing stress on the rest of the system and reducing noise.

Different types of expansion joints

Expansion joints are available in four basic designs:

  • Rubber expansion joints
  • stainless steel expansion joints
  • PTFE Expansion joints
  • Tissue expansion joints

The different versions have specific characteristics and are therefore used in different applications. Each type of expansion joint is suitable for a particular combination of pressure and temperature. For example, fabric expansion joints are suitable for high temperatures i.c.w. low pressures, while stainless steel expansion joints are suitable for a very wide range.

The selection of expansion joints

The correct expansion joint is selected based on the medium, temperature, pressure and movement in the pipe. Furthermore, it is important to know which installation length is available and desired.

A universal -also called ''unshaped'- expansion joint can accommodate axial, lateral and angular movements. Besides this basic version, Hanwel can supply expansion joints that can only absorb one of the above movements or a combination.

Approximately 95% of the stainless steel expansion joints we supply are custom-made solutions, which are designed based on the input and wishes of our customers. When you receive a quotation, we will provide you with a standard technical design drawing which includes dimensions, applied standards, materials used and spring rates.

What are expansion joints?

Cheap can be expensive. When purchasing an expansion joint, it is important to also consider how a piping system is supported.

Within a pressurized system, pressure reaction forces exist. These forces are absorbed by the pipe or by the pressure vessel in the form of material tension.

If a pipe is insufficiently supported and the wrong expansion joint is used, the pressure reaction force released can have very unpleasant consequences for a pipeline system.
