The challenges of flue gas systems

Where combustion takes place one has to deal with combustion gases. Where there is heating or residual heat, one deals with hot air. ''Flue gases'' or flue is an umbrella term for gases or streams of air moved at low pressure in mostly large pipes.

Whereas other professional disciplines are particularly concerned with higher pressure levels, the focus in this discipline tends to be high to very high operating temperatures. With temperatures up to 1000⁰C, specific attention must be paid to the expansion of steelwork and the selection of the right materials is crucial.

Hanwel has the knowledge to advise clients on the best solutions to specific challenges.

Flue gas valves

With valves for flue gas systems, three aspects are crucial: material selection, sealing system and customization.

With a temperature range of 50⁰C to 1050⁰C, we are fully flexible to perform the right material selection for any system. Depending on the required tightness, we can supply valves with metal seal, soft seal or barrier air system. This allows us to meet leakage rates I,II,III and VI according to ANSI/FCI 70-2. To achieve 100% tightness we can supply complete plug & play systems consisting of valve, fan, air control valve and intermediate piping.

Finally, flue gas systems require flexibility in shape (round, rectangular, square), design (single or multiple blades) and dimensions. We can manufacture exactly what your process requires and piping layout requires.

Hanwel B.V. supplies a diversity of flue gas shut-off valves; from regulating valves for hot air to shut-off systems for marine gas scrubbers. More information? Contact us!

Tissue expansion joints

With operational temperatures that can reach 200⁰C to 1000⁰C, expansion of steelwork is a fact of life to consider. Flexibility must be built into the system to prevent stress and associated damage. Because of the mostly low pressure in the system, fabric expansion joints are a common solution to this problem. The operation of this expansion joint is based on temperature degradation across the various fabric layers that comprise it.

A fabric expansion joint is always customized where the composition and design is selected based on the maximum operating temperature and medium composition. The higher the temperature, the more insulation layers will be added. Hanwel B.V. can supply a combination of fabric expansion joints and flue gas valves where we add both control and flexibility to the process.

Stainless steel expansion joints for flue gas

Because stainless steel expansion joints can accommodate a wide range of temperature levels, they are also excellent for flue gas and hot air applications.

Depending on the application, we can supply axial, lateral and angular stainless steel expansion joints for mounting in or on hot air and flue gas piping. The limiting factor is the size/price combination, so stainless steel expansion joints are mainly used in smaller flue gas systems and fabric expansion joints mainly in larger systems. PTFE plain bearings for flue gas systems

In flue gas systems, movements can occur when the system ''warms up'' or ''cools down'' from warm condition to ambient condition and vice versa. PTFE plain bearings are used where devices or piping must be able to move with a very low frictional force. The PTFE slide plates can take a high axial load and have a friction value less than 0.1. The bearings consist of a carrier containing PTFE sliding plates and a polished stainless steel counter bearing.

Supports for flue gas systems

In flue gas systems, stress occurs in the piping system due to heating and cooling of the system. Depending on the nature of the movements in the piping system and the piping layout, suspended or supporting spring supports can be used. the purpose of these supports is to absorb the vertical movements of the piping. Hanwel offers a complete range of pipe supports for flue gas systems.
