Innovative replacement of existing flue gas valve
The challenge
A major refinery in the Netherlands approached Hanwel to replace an old flue gas valve at a critical position in the plant.
The old flue gas valve was completely worn out and needed to be replaced. Here it was important that the existing drive system could be reused and that the new valve had to take over all existing functions of the current valve. The drive system used a double lever movement to which the valve to be supplied by Hanwel had to fit perfectly.
How did Hanwel help?
During a site visit, the current system was viewed and all dimensions were measured. In this way, Hanwel was able to design a one-to-one replacement that could be fitted appropriately. The solution was a DN1250 flue gas valve equipped with an insulation layer of 125mm thickness. The insulation layer was sealed with an internal lining made of Alloy 800 HT according to the customer's requirements.
Through a counterweight, fail-to-open operation is guaranteed in case of actuator failure. The valve was delivered with an identical flange bore as the old flue gas valve. A dummy was supplied with this, which was temporarily installed before the real replacement could be put into service.
The result
The challenge for this project was the connection to the current drive system, which uses a double lever action instead of the conventional quarter-turn rotation. To provide optimum flexibility during installation, the valve was supplied with a mechanical link consisting of two levers that could each be adjusted by a few centimeters in two locations. In this way, the connection of our valve to the current system could be adjusted both in length, width and height. This led to a trouble-free installation of the valve on-site.
The result is a high-quality flue gas valve that serves as a one-to-one replacement for the current system. The design of the flue gas valve offers optimum flexibility, making installation and commissioning hassle-free.
