The challenge

A leading manufacturer of turbines approached Hanwel B.V. with a complex question. A flue gas valve must realize full (100%) gas tightness in a large piping system (1381x621mm) running at 550⁰C. With these high temperatures, it is not easy to guarantee 100% tightness because soft sealing materials cannot be used. If the valve does not guarantee full tightness then life-threatening situations will arise further down the system.

How did Hanwel help?

For these conditions, we develop flue gas valves with a barrier system that guarantees full tightness through a curtain of barrier air. Based on the customer's requirements, a complete system is designed including flue gas valve, barrier air valve, mechanical link, pneumatic actuator, fan and connecting pipe parts.

The fan is attached directly to the flue valve through a custom bracket so that it is one complete system. The damper blade is duplicated where there is a chamber for barrier air. Because the pressure of the barrier air curtain is higher than the in-line pressure, no leakage can occur.

The result

Before we proceed to production, the customer always receives a GAD and 3D file for approval. During this phase, quite a few more details were fine-tuned and adjusted, leading to production. The result is a plug-and-play system capable of completely gas-tight sealing flue gases at 550⁰C. Hereby all demanding customer requests have been met, including a specific material for internal insulation, IP66 classification for all instrumentation, coating system according to customer specification and packaging & marking according to project requirements.

Our flue gas dampers with shut-off system are custom manufactured at all times, so we are almost always able to provide a suitable solution to our customers' requirements.
